  • It may soon be harder for teens to have social media accounts in South Carolina.

The South Carolina House has passed a bill that requires social media companies to verify the age of new users and obtain parental consent for those under 18, aiming to protect minors from online dangers. The legislation, which passed with a vote of 115-0, mandates that social media platforms must use third-party verification services to confirm users' ages. If a user is found to be under 18, the company must get permission from a parent or guardian before allowing the account to be created. The bill also includes provisions for potential lawsuits against social media companies if they fail to comply with these requirements. The measure now moves to the South Carolina Senate for further consideration.
