  • Recently, this was a reality, as more than two dozen Wilmington College students were asked to go a day without their phones. Punishment? No. This was a hands-on learning and living experience assigned by Professor of Social Science and Communication Arts Dr. Audrey Wagstaff.

The article from the Highland County Press discusses an educational exercise at Wilmington College where students participated in a 24-hour media exclusion, giving up their cell phones and other media devices. This initiative, part of a course on media and society, aimed to help students understand their dependency on digital media and reflect on its impact on their lives. During this period, students engaged in alternative activities like reading, writing, and face-to-face interactions, which many found both challenging and enlightening. The exercise highlighted issues like FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out), the constant need for connectivity, and the psychological effects of being disconnected. Students reported mixed feelings; some felt liberated from the digital world, while others experienced anxiety and a sense of isolation. The exercise concluded with discussions on how media influences behavior, communication, and personal well-being, providing a deeper insight into their own media consumption habits.
