The safety and acceptance of LGBTQ individuals have significantly declined across the United States, according to a report by the Human Rights Campaign, which noted a sharp increase in anti-LGBTQ legislation and rhetoric. Over 525 bills targeting the community were introduced in state legislatures in 2023, with more than 70 becoming law, affecting various aspects of life including healthcare, education, and public accommodations. The report highlighted a rise in hate crimes, with the FBI reporting a 70% increase in anti-LGBTQ hate crimes from 2020 to 2021, and a significant uptick in online harassment and threats. States like Florida, Texas, and Tennessee were identified as having the most hostile environments, with policies such as Florida's "Don't Say Gay" law contributing to a climate of fear and exclusion. The Human Rights Campaign emphasized the urgent need for federal and state action to protect the rights and safety of LGBTQ individuals.
