The Bombay High Court has provided relief to filmmaker Karan Johar by refusing to allow the release of the film "Shaadi Ke Director Karan Aur Johar," which was deemed to infringe on Johar's personality rights. The court, presided over by Justice R I Chagla, issued an ad-interim injunction against the film's release, citing that the title's use of Johar's name could mislead the public into believing he was associated with the project. The court emphasized that while freedom of speech and expression is fundamental, it must be balanced against the protection of an individual's personality rights, especially when such usage could cause confusion or damage to one's reputation. The film's producers had argued that the title was a tribute to Johar, but the court found this insufficient to override Johar's rights. The matter is set for further hearing on June 13, 2024.
