The press freedom organization, Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press (RCFP), has threatened to sue Paramount Global if the company settles a lawsuit brought by former President Donald Trump over a scene in the film "The Apprentice" that allegedly defames him. The RCFP argues that settling the case would have a chilling effect on free speech and the ability of filmmakers to portray public figures. The scene in question reportedly depicts Trump raping his first wife, Ivana, an allegation she made during their divorce proceedings but later recanted. Trump's lawsuit claims the scene is false and defamatory, while the film's director, Ali Abbasi, maintains it is based on widely reported accounts. The RCFP's letter to Paramount warns that settling could lead to a precedent that discourages filmmakers from tackling controversial subjects involving public figures.
