Despite price hikes, Americans spent less on streaming services in 2024

Streaming fatigue has officially taken hold in the US, as a new survey shows Americans spent 23% less on streaming services in 2024.

In 2024, despite price increases by major streaming services like Netflix, Hulu, and Disney+, Americans actually spent less on these platforms compared to previous years. According to a report by Parks Associates, the average monthly spending on streaming services dropped to $69, down from $90 in 2021. This decline is attributed to consumers becoming more selective with their subscriptions, opting for ad-supported tiers, and engaging in "churn" behavior where they subscribe, watch content, and then cancel. The report highlights that while the cost per service has gone up, the overall number of subscriptions per household has decreased, leading to lower total expenditure on streaming services.
