  • A total of eight crews of firefighters fought the blaze in the middle of the central Otago town, which destroyed the Roxburgh Town Hall, including its 128-year-old cinema.

The blaze, which started around 1am, completely destroyed the historic building, leaving only the brick walls standing. The Roxburgh Town Hall was not just a venue but a cherished community hub hosting various events like weddings, concerts, and markets. Local residents expressed their grief over the loss of this significant landmark, with many sharing memories of events held there. The cause of the fire is under investigation, and while no injuries were reported, the loss of the hall has been described as a "huge blow" to the town's heart. The community is now rallying together, discussing ways to rebuild and restore this central part of their heritage.
