  • Ofcom received 825 complaints over the Brit Awards, with the majority relating to Sabrina Carpenter's raunchy performance and Charli XCX's outfit, the media watchdog says.

Sabrina Carpenter's performance at the 2023 Brit Awards, where she sang her hit song "Nonsense," has sparked controversy and led to numerous complaints to Ofcom, the UK's communications regulator. During her performance, Carpenter altered the lyrics to include a playful reference to the host venue, the O2 Arena, with the line, "This crowd is giving me all the right attention / I’m tryna keep it together, but I’m not / I’m gonna make a million pounds tonight, even if I gotta strip at the O2." This cheeky lyric change was interpreted by some viewers as suggestive, leading to 116 complaints about the appropriateness of the content for the time slot, which was pre-watershed, meaning it was broadcast before 9 p.m. when children could be watching. Despite the backlash, Carpenter's performance was part of a night celebrating music, where she was also nominated for the International Song of the Year.
