A guide has been produced to help many mums and dads who don't know how to put parental controls on tech presents to stop strangers from contacting their kids.

A recent study by Virgin Media O2 and Internet Matters has revealed that a significant number of parents are unaware of how to secure their children's tech gifts against online threats. The research, which surveyed 1,000 parents of children aged 5-16, found that 71% of parents are not confident in setting up parental controls, and 67% do not know how to protect devices from viruses and malware. Additionally, 62% of parents are unsure about safeguarding their children's personal information online. This lack of knowledge comes at a time when children are increasingly using technology for education and entertainment, highlighting a critical gap in digital literacy among parents. The study also pointed out that while 87% of parents believe they are responsible for their children's online safety, many are not taking adequate steps to ensure this, with only 37% having set up parental controls on their children's devices.
