Harvard University sued President Donald Trump's administration on Monday, The New York Times and The Harvard Crimson reported, in the latest escalation between the educational institution and the government.

Harvard University has initiated legal action against the Trump administration over a new policy that would bar international students from staying in the U.S. if their courses are entirely online, a move prompted by the ongoing global health crisis. The lawsuit, filed in a Boston federal court, challenges the Department of Homeland Security and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement's directive that threatens the visas of students at institutions like Harvard and MIT, which have planned to conduct the upcoming fall semester online. Harvard's President, Lawrence Bacow, emphasized the university's commitment to its international students, arguing that the policy is needlessly cruel and undermines the educational mission of American colleges. The lawsuit seeks to block the policy, highlighting its potential to disrupt the lives of thousands of students and the operations of universities across the country.
