A musical inspired by viral Olympic breakdancer Raygun was shut down hours before it was due to open on Saturday, after lawyers representing the athlete threatened legal action, the show's creator said on social media.
"Raygun: The Musical," a production by the New Zealand Dance Company, was abruptly canceled following legal action from a breakdancer featured in the show. The dancer, known as B-Boy Mickey, claimed that his contributions were used without proper consent or compensation. The controversy arose when the show, which was set to run for three weeks, began to receive attention for its innovative blend of dance styles, including breakdancing. After B-Boy Mickey's legal team intervened, the show's producers decided to pull the production to avoid further legal complications. This decision has sparked discussions about the rights of artists and the ethical considerations in the use of cultural expressions in commercial performances.
