A university student at the University of Oxford, named Emmanuelle, was nearly expelled for posting lyrics from Cardi B's song "WAP" on her Instagram story. The incident occurred in 2021 when she shared the lyrics as part of a meme, which was deemed offensive by some, leading to a formal complaint and an investigation by the university. Despite the potential for expulsion, Emmanuelle was eventually cleared of any wrongdoing. Following the ordeal, she took legal action against the university for discrimination, arguing that the investigation was mishandled and disproportionately focused on her due to her race and gender. Recently, she was awarded £200,000 (approximately $250,000) in an out-of-court settlement, highlighting issues of freedom of expression and institutional responses to student conduct in the context of cultural expressions.
