  • Teens aren't just sneaking quick glances at their phones during class. They're spending an average of 1.5 hours on them every school day, with 25% of students logging on for more than two hours, according to a new study published Monday in JAMA Pediatrics.

A recent study highlighted in ABC News reveals that teenagers are spending an average of nearly five hours a day on their phones, with a significant portion of this usage occurring during school hours. The research, which analyzed data from over 200,000 adolescents, found that teens spend about 43 minutes on their phones during school time, despite restrictions. This usage pattern raises concerns about the impact on their education, mental health, and social interactions. The study also noted that while some of this time is spent on educational activities, a considerable amount is dedicated to social media, gaming, and other non-academic pursuits. Experts suggest that while technology can be beneficial, the excessive screen time might contribute to issues like sleep deprivation, anxiety, and reduced physical activity among teens.
