Sony to become largest shareholder in FromSoftware parent company Kadokawa

  • On Jan. 7, 2025, Sony will become Kadokawa's largest stockholder by purchasing 12,054,100 new Kadokawa shares for 50 billion yen (around $320 million). This purchase, combined with a previous round of share acquisition in February 2021, will bring Sony's total holding in Kadokawa to 10% of the company.

Sony has become the largest shareholder in Kadokawa, the Japanese media conglomerate that owns FromSoftware, the developer behind critically acclaimed games like "Dark Souls," "Bloodborne," and "Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice." This acquisition was part of a broader investment strategy by Sony to strengthen its position in the gaming and entertainment industry. The deal involved Sony purchasing a 1.93% stake in Kadokawa, which, while seemingly small, was enough to make Sony the largest single shareholder due to Kadokawa's dispersed ownership structure. This move not only signifies Sony's interest in FromSoftware's unique game development capabilities but also aims to foster closer collaboration between Sony's PlayStation division and Kadokawa's extensive portfolio of media properties, potentially leading to more exclusive content and cross-media projects.
