  • Last-minute sales, limited-time offers and half-off deals can be hard to resist for some holiday shoppers. This season, Americans were projected to spend seven percent more than 2023. But a social media trend is urging eager consumers to hit pause before pressing the purchase button.

The PBS NewsHour segment discusses a growing social media trend among young people known as "de-influencing," where individuals are encouraged to buy less and reconsider their consumption habits. This movement is a response to the pervasive culture of overconsumption fueled by traditional influencer marketing, which often promotes unnecessary purchases. De-influencers on platforms like TikTok and Instagram are gaining traction by advocating for minimalism, sustainability, and mindful spending. They critique the environmental impact of fast fashion and excessive consumerism, urging followers to think critically about what they buy, reduce waste, and prioritize experiences over material goods. This trend reflects a broader shift towards more ethical consumption practices, especially among Gen Z, who are increasingly aware of the ecological footprint of their lifestyle choices.
