SC refuses to entertain fresh pleas challenging Waqf (Amendment) Act

The Supreme Court of India, on May 1, 2024, declined to entertain fresh pleas challenging the constitutional validity of the Waqf Amendment Act, 2013, asserting that the issue is already under consideration by a larger bench. The court, led by Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud, advised the petitioners to present their case before the existing nine-judge bench, which is currently deliberating on related matters concerning the Waqf Act. The petitioners, including BJP leader Ashwini Kumar Upadhyay and lawyer Vishnu Shankar Jain, argued that the Act infringes on the rights of non-Muslims and violates secularism, but the court maintained that it would not hear the pleas separately and directed them to await the decision of the larger bench.
