The National Museum of African American History and Culture, located on the National Mall in Washington D.C., opened its doors on September 24, 2016. This museum, part of the Smithsonian Institution, is dedicated to documenting and showcasing the rich history and culture of African Americans. It features over 36,000 artifacts spread across 12 themed exhibitions, including sections on slavery, civil rights, and African American achievements in sports, music, and the military. The museum's architecture, designed by David Adjaye, is inspired by the Yoruba art of Nigeria, symbolizing a 'corona' that represents the importance of gathering and community. The museum not only serves as an educational resource but also as a place for reflection and celebration of African American contributions to American history.
