IIM Mumbai, Whistling Woods partner for 2-year MBA course in media & entertainment

IIM Mumbai and Whistling Woods Join Forces for a 2‑Year MBA in Media & Entertainment
In a bold move that underscores the growing importance of the creative economy in India, the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Mumbai has partnered with the world‑renowned film and media school Whistling Woods to launch a two‑year full‑time MBA program in Media & Entertainment (M&E). The joint venture, announced in an official press release on 5 June 2024, is aimed at producing a new breed of leaders who can navigate the rapidly evolving intersection of business, technology and creativity that defines today’s media landscape.
A Curriculum that Blends Business Acumen with Creative Expertise
At the heart of the program is a rigorous curriculum that marries core management disciplines with industry‑specific modules taught by practitioners from the entertainment and digital media sectors. Students will take foundational courses in finance, marketing, strategy, operations and analytics, while also attending specialized electives such as “Digital Content Strategy”, “Entertainment Economics”, “Film Production Management”, “Data‑Driven Audience Insights” and “Creative Entrepreneurship”.
One of the program’s unique features is its emphasis on experiential learning. According to Dr. Ashish P. Jani, Vice‑Chancellor of IIM Mumbai, “The world of media is experiential by nature. Our students will work on live projects for film production houses, streaming platforms, advertising agencies and emerging startups, thereby translating classroom concepts into real‑world impact.” Whistling Woods will provide seasoned faculty and industry mentors to guide students through these projects, drawing on its network of alumni and collaborators that includes Disney India, Amazon Prime Video, Sony Pictures and Zee Studios.
In addition to the core curriculum, the MBA incorporates a capstone “Strategic Media Lab”, where teams of students design a comprehensive business plan for a hypothetical media venture—be it a niche OTT platform, a content‑creation studio or a digital marketing agency. The lab culminates in a pitch to a panel of investors and industry veterans, giving students invaluable exposure to fundraising and investor relations.
Admissions, Fees and Logistics
The inaugural intake is slated for the 2025 academic year, with the first cohort expected to begin in August 2025. Admissions will be conducted through a combination of the Common Admission Test (CAT) scores, a written assessment on media knowledge, and a personal interview panel that includes faculty from both institutions.
Applicants will need to meet the baseline criteria of a graduate degree with a minimum 50 % aggregate, and a strong CAT score (top 5 % percentile). The selection process is highly competitive, with an estimated 1,500 applicants for just 100 seats.
Tuition fees for the two‑year program are set at INR 32 lakhs (approximately USD 41,000). The fee structure covers tuition, access to IIM Mumbai’s state‑of‑the‑art campus facilities, Whistling Woods’ production studios, guest‑lecture series and industry‑partner workshops. Scholarship options are available for meritorious and under‑represented students, with up to 50 % of the tuition fee potentially covered.
Students will be housed in the newly refurbished “Madhya Kendra” campus in Powai, which houses modern lecture halls, simulation labs, a media‑production suite and a collaborative co‑working space. The campus is designed to foster interdisciplinary collaboration, with separate zones for business, creative and technical students.
Industry Partnerships and Placement Outlook
One of the biggest selling points of the MBA is the promise of a strong industry link. As part of the partnership, Whistling Woods will leverage its industry contacts to facilitate internship placements and live projects. IIM Mumbai’s placement cell has historically delivered high salary packages, and the new program is expected to continue that trend.
According to a recent placement report from IIM Mumbai, the average package for the MBA in Business Analytics cohort was INR 21 lakhs in 2023. The M&E program aims to push these numbers higher, given the premium demand for media‑savvy talent in India’s entertainment and digital sectors. Early talks with key industry players such as Sony Pictures, Amazon Prime Video, Disney+ Hotstar and Zee5 indicate interest in hiring graduates with a blend of management skills and creative fluency.
In addition to direct placement, alumni of the program will have access to an exclusive “Media & Entertainment Alumni Network” that connects them with senior executives, venture capitalists and creative leaders across the globe. The network will host quarterly round‑tables, mentorship programs and an annual “Media MBA Summit” featuring industry keynote speakers.
The Bigger Picture: Media & Entertainment as a Growth Engine
India’s media and entertainment sector has grown from a niche niche to a multi‑billion‑rupee industry, driven by the explosion of streaming services, the rise of digital content, and the proliferation of mobile devices. According to the Indian Media & Entertainment Report 2023, the sector generated INR 3.3 trillion in revenue in 2022, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 7.5 % projected through 2027.
The partnership between IIM Mumbai and Whistling Woods is thus a strategic response to a clear market need: professionals who can not only manage media companies but also understand the nuances of storytelling, audience psychology, and digital monetization. The program’s emphasis on data‑driven decision making—an area where IIM Mumbai has established expertise—pairs perfectly with Whistling Woods’ creative training, creating a holistic curriculum that is difficult to find elsewhere.
Looking Ahead
With the launch of this program, IIM Mumbai is positioning itself as a pioneer in the M&E education space in India. The joint MBA promises to produce graduates who can bridge the gap between creative vision and commercial viability—an increasingly valuable skill set in an age where content is king.
The media landscape is in constant flux, and institutions that can adapt quickly will set the industry’s trajectory. By combining the analytical rigor of an IIM with the creative pedigree of Whistling Woods, the new MBA is a testament to the power of interdisciplinary collaboration.
