Azerbaijani media said Ali had been placed in pre-trial detention for one month and 29 days on suspicion of smuggling. Several other journalists have been charged with smuggling in recent months, an accusation they reject as politically-motivated and say is designed to silence critical voices. Oil-rich Azerbaijan has rejected Western criticism of the arrests, saying comments by Western diplomats and rights groups calling for the release of activists and journalists amount to interference in its judicial system.

On November 21, 2023, Azerbaijani police detained another journalist, Ulvi Hasanli, the editor-in-chief of the independent Abzas Media, marking the fourth arrest of a journalist from this outlet within a month. The arrests are believed to be connected to Abzas Media's investigations into alleged corruption among Azerbaijani officials. Hasanli was detained at the media outlet's office in Baku, and his lawyer reported that he was subjected to physical violence during the arrest. The Azerbaijani authorities have not yet commented on the reasons for Hasanli's detention, but these actions have raised concerns about press freedom and the government's efforts to suppress critical reporting in the country.
