  • Japan's Emperor Emeritus Akihito will undergo heart tests at a hospital after an unspecified problem was detected during a routine checkup, Japanese media reports said Monday. The Imperial Household Agency did not answer calls to its office on Monday, a national holiday, to confirm reports by the Kyodo News Service and several other Japanese . Akihito, 91, who is retired, is the father of Emperor Naruhito.

Japan's former Emperor Akihito, who abdicated in 2019, was hospitalized on February 12, 2023, for treatment of a respiratory ailment, as announced by the Imperial Household Agency. The 89-year-old was admitted to the University of Tokyo Hospital after experiencing symptoms such as a fever and was diagnosed with bronchitis, though his condition is not believed to be severe. This hospitalization marks the first time Akihito has been admitted to the hospital since his retirement, during which he has continued to engage in public life, albeit in a more limited capacity.
