A study published in the journal JAMA Pediatrics, as reported by Mashable, has found a correlation between the use of social media by young people and an increased risk of depression. The research, which analyzed data from over 6,500 young individuals aged 12 to 15, showed that those who spent more than three hours per day on social media were at a higher risk of developing depressive symptoms. The study suggests that the nature of social media, which often involves comparing oneself to others and seeking validation through likes and comments, may contribute to feelings of inadequacy and low self-esteem among youth. While the study does not prove that social media directly causes depression, it highlights the need for parents and educators to be aware of the potential mental health impacts of excessive social media use among young people.
