  • About half of the Jewish characters featured in scripted TV series were played by Jews, according to a study by USC Annenberg Norman Lear Center.
The USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative and the Norman Lear Center have released a study examining the portrayal of Jewish characters on scripted television, revealing that while there has been an increase in Jewish representation, it often comes with problematic stereotypes. The study, titled "The Quota and the Echo: How Jewish Representation on TV Has Changed Since the 1990s," analyzed over 1,300 characters from 200 popular shows across three decades. It found that Jewish characters are frequently depicted in a narrow range of professions like entertainment, law, and medicine, and are often portrayed as wealthy, neurotic, or manipulative. The report highlights a lack of diversity in terms of socioeconomic status, physical appearance, and religious observance among Jewish characters, with many shows still relying on outdated tropes. The study calls for more nuanced and varied portrayals to reflect the true diversity within the Jewish community and to combat antisemitism through more accurate representation.
