The Information and Broadcasting Ministry has issued an advisory to online curated content platforms and social media, emphasizing adherence to the 2021 IT Rules. This includes age-based content classification and restricted access to 'A' rated content.
The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting in India has issued an advisory to Over-The-Top (OTT) platforms, urging them to regulate content more stringently due to concerns over the spread of obscene and vulgar material. This advisory comes in response to numerous complaints about content that is deemed inappropriate, particularly content involving explicit sexual scenes, abusive language, and themes that could be seen as offensive or against Indian cultural ethos. The ministry has emphasized the need for these platforms to implement robust content moderation and classification systems, ensuring that content aligns with the IT Rules, 2021, which mandate the display of age-based content classification and the use of access control mechanisms. The advisory also warns that failure to comply could lead to legal actions under the IT Act and other relevant laws, highlighting the government's intent to safeguard public morality and protect viewers, especially children, from exposure to potentially harmful content.
