US takes aim at Zuckerberg's social media kingdom

  • Barring any eleventh-hour intervention, social media juggernaut Meta will stand trial next week facing serious US government allegations that it abused its market power to acquire Instagram and WhatsApp before they could become competitors.Google was found guilty of search market dominance abuse last August, while Apple and Amazon also face cases.

The U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has filed a lawsuit against Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, alleging that the company has been monopolizing the social media market and stifling competition. The lawsuit claims that Meta has engaged in anticompetitive practices, including acquiring potential rivals like Instagram and WhatsApp, and imposing restrictive policies that hinder other companies from accessing its platform. The FTC is seeking a court order to potentially force Meta to divest its Instagram and WhatsApp acquisitions and to prohibit the company from engaging in future anticompetitive behavior. Meta has responded by stating that the lawsuit is an attempt to rewrite antitrust laws and that it will vigorously defend itself against the allegations.
