The country's main Christian broadcaster is revamping and expanding its output, even as its target market shrinks and pleasing a broad church is tough in times of polarisation.
Christian broadcaster Rhema Media is expanding its reach by launching a new station, Life FM, in Dunedin and increasing its presence in Invercargill, which contrasts with the general trend of media contraction in New Zealand. This expansion is supported by a significant increase in listenership, with Rhema's audience growing by 16% to 337,000 listeners, and Life FM's audience rising by 25% to 104,000 listeners. The broadcaster attributes this growth to a focus on positive and family-friendly content, as well as the addition of new shows and the expansion of existing ones. Rhema Media's CEO, Jason Renwick, emphasized the organization's commitment to serving the community and providing content that resonates with listeners, which has enabled them to buck the trend of declining media audiences.
